New Dad Blues
Most people are familiar with the term ‘post natal depression’ which is a condition that affects many new mothers after they have given birth. However, a surprising number of people are unaware that new dads can also suffer from stress and depression, and this condition is actually more common than most people might imagine. A new baby can be a very emotional and confusing time for a dad, as it is just as much of a dramatic life change for the father as it is for the mother. However, there are some simple tips that could help to reduce the effects of new dad blues.
- If you are feeling stressed or depressed after the arrival of the new baby, make sure that you don’t shut your partner out. Speak to her and support one another through what can become a difficult time.
- Don’t be frightened to get to know the baby remember the mother has been carrying the child for nine months and may feel a closer bond. As a father you will start bonding with the baby after birth, and throwing yourself into getting to know the baby could help to take your mind off the worries and anxieties that you may have.
- If you feel that you need extra support and advice don’t be afraid to ask for it, as there is plenty of assistance available. Just like a new mom that may be suffering from depression, it is important that dads suffering from the condition seek help to enable them to get back on track and focus on the new baby as well as maintain their own health.
- Give yourself time to adjust to the situation, and don’t just assume that it is never going to work because you haven’t settled into fatherhood within a day or two. This is a life changing situation for new dads as well as moms, and sometimes it just takes a little time and patience to get into the swing of things.
One thing to keep in mind is that post natal depression in both men and women is certainly nothing to be embarrassed about, as this is a common condition and there is plenty of support and help available for new dads as well as moms. So, if you do feel that as a new dad you are feeling the blues never feel worried about seeking that extra help and advice.
