Family Relationships
As a grandparent it is important to maintain a close relationship with your grandchildren, and this means being able to see them on a regular basis and being able to bond with them. For most proud grandparents being part of a close family unit is important, but this can sometimes be difficult depending on the relationship you have with your own children – the mother or father of your grandchildren. This is why it is important to maintain a healthy relationship with your children as well as your grandchildren, in order to ensure that you will have the opportunity to spend time with your grandchildren and see them on a regular basis.
Another reasons for maintaining a healthy relationship with your grandchildren is that you never know if or when you may have to assume the role of a parent whether it is on a short term or a long term basis. It is impossible to predict what life holds in store, and if something happens to the parents you may need to take on a parenting role for your grandchildren. This could be made very difficult if you have never formed a close bond with them. Some pointers for ensuring that you maintain a good relationship with your grandchildren include:
- Always maintain a good relationship with your children, as this will affect the interaction that you have with your grandchildren and how you are able to bond with them.
- Make sure that you get you see your grandchildren on a regular basis, and spend quality time with them, as a parent would, interacting, talking to them, and listening to what they have to say.
- Family relationships aren’t always smooth running, and it is important to exercise patience, especially with grandchildren, who may not always be able to relate to grandparents easily. Persevere with your relationship with your grandchildren and don’t try and push things as this could put a string on the relationship.
Part of maintaining a healthy family relationship with the family unit as a grandparent is through effective interaction, so make sure that you always have quality time to put aide and spend as part of the family unit, as this can make a big difference to the way you bond as part of the family.
