Sports & Fitness in Teens
Sport and fitness is a very important area for most teenagers. Some teens will naturally become sporty throughout their childhood, and may even play for school sports teams. Others, however, may not have really developed a taste for sports and it is up to the parents to help encourage the child to take part in more active pastimes. The teenage years can be awkward ones as far as diet, health, and nutrition are concerned, and in order to encourage all round good health, parents should encourage their kids to be more active as well as to enjoy a healthy and nutritious diet.
In addition to this, with many teens who were physically active in the past, the interest in sports in fitness drops as they develop more of an interest in going out, spending time with friends, messing on the computer, and even dating and the opposite sex. It is important to encourage these teens to continue enjoying sports and fitness, whether this is at home, with friends, or at school.
- Find out what sort of sport your teen enjoys, and encourage them to take part in this activity with friends. For instance, if your teen enjoys playing tennis, buy him or her a racquet and find out where the nearest facilities are so that he or she can spend some time there with friends after school or at weekends. You could even join in, and take your teen there once or twice a week, thus improving your own fitness as well as spending quality time with your teen.
- Encourage sports and fitness within the home. Even if you don’t have the money to purchase expensive equipment and use sports facilities you can encourage your teen to enjoy other forms of fitness such as running, a daily jog, or even playing sports in the garden.
- Combine sports encouragement with encouragement of a healthy eating regime. Obesity and nutritional problems have become matters for great concern over recent years, but by encouraging your child to enjoy daily sports activity as well as helping them to maintain a healthy diet you can reduce the risk of obesity, and therefore reduce associated problems such as health issues, bullying, low self esteem, etc.
Encouraging your teen to enjoy sports and fitness is important to his or her development, and in addition to helping them to keep fit during a crucial time in their lives can help to reduce the risk of social withdrawal, and provides a healthy way in which teens can interact with friends as well as family, improving their confidence as well as their fitness.
