Family travel
Enjoying a family vacation is a fun and exciting experience for most families, but if you have younger children it is important that you do a little preparation in order to ensure that the vacation runs smoothly. Remember, the needs and preferences of a smaller, younger child are going to be very different to those of an older child, and without the right preparation a family vacation could turn into something of a nightmare. You need to think about the younger child when it comes to travelling to your destination as well as when it comes to choosing the right destination, as the last thing you want is a totally bored youngster on your hands.
- When selecting a destination for your family vacation try and find somewhere that the whole family can enjoy, including the younger kids. It is unlikely that a youngster will enjoy being dragged around to museums and galleries, or will want to spend all vacation sightseeing. Opt for a family oriented destination, such as Orlando, where there are theme parks and entertainment to suit all ages.
- Think about the younger kids when planning your travel to your chosen destination. If you are going by car then you will be able to take break whenever you need to, which won’t prove such a problem. However, if you are travelling by coach, and in particular, if you are flying on a longer haul journey, you should make sure that you take plenty to keep the younger kids amused, such as books, simple board games or cards, colouring books, and other items that are not too bulky but will help to keep their minds busy.
- Take some snacks along for the kids to enjoy whilst on the journey, particularly when it comes to longer journeys. Remember, when younger kids get hungry they tend to let you – and everyone else – know about it. Having some healthy snacks on hand will help to keep the hunger pangs at bay between meals.
- Depending on where you are going, draw up an itinerary of things that you can do each day, which will entertain the younger kids as well as older kids and adults. Remember, it is a family vacation, and therefore it should cater for the whole family, including the youngsters.
- If you are going to be travelling for a long time or even overnight, make sure that the younger children don’t sleep excessively the day before. It is important that, despite their excitement, they get some sleep on the plane, coach, or car, when you are travelling for longer periods, otherwise they will be tired, grumpy, and will be worn out by the time you arrive at your destination.
